When my eldest son turned 18 not long ago, there was a lot to think about other than baking a cake and choosing a gift.

Like all parents, I thought of what’s ahead with a mix of joy and worry, but mostly with excitement. The journey as a grownup is about to begin, right?

I also thought of my friend Jessie Simpson, whom I’ve met in November 2018 and been spending almost every Sunday afternoon with until the pandemic started. It’s impossible not to think of him every time I think of young people starting out in life or graduating, ready for adventures and embracing life.

The deadly dog attack that happened in Brocklehurst last week was by far the most commented-on news story in a long time. A witness said the victim had a seizure, which allegedly triggered an attack from the dog, resulting in the man’s death.

Never mind the breed debate, it was disconcerting to see too many people feeling sorry for the dog before they expressed the same for the human that was killed. Some were wondering whether the man did something to provoke the dog.

A parent’s worst nightmare is without a doubt the death of their child. More so when the death was preventable.

My eldest mentioned on Friday a teenager in Kamloops had suffered a fatal overdose and like every parent out there, I hoped it was just rumours. There was nothing in the news because as we all know, news on social media travels a lot faster.

Sadly, the rumours turned out to be true. A family in Kamloops is living that worst nightmare right now.

Snakes near playgrounds, dead dogs on airplanes, horrendous puppy mills, exotic pets that should never be owned by anyone other than Mother Nature – welcome to the dark side of pet ownership.

The latest story was the snake spotted in Coquitlam near a playground a few days ago. Luckily, no one was hurt and the snake was apprehended.

That’s not always the case with escaped exotic pets.

I was planning to make this column about the often-forgotten pandemic which is the logging of B.C.’s old growth forests but on Saturday morning I came across a story that made me postpone my topic until next time.

Last week, John Quesnel, a resident of Salt Spring Island, ambushed and killed his recently estranged wife, Jennifer Quesnel.  A week before, she had finally decided to leave him him after 18 years of ‘controlling and abusive behaviour’ according to a statement released by her family.

When I think of ‘aging gracefully’, it is not the wrinkle-free skin and perpetual youthfulness that come to mind but living independently and enjoying every day until the final goodbye.

Growing up, I got to see that a lot. Many of the elderly I knew lived on their own managing the best they could and getting occasional help from family, and some moved in with their loved ones when they became too frail.

I lost my grandparents at a young age, but we had many elderly neighbours who were part of our lives.

It’s not every day that you see someone in a municipal park hacking away at Saskatoon bushes with a chainsaw. You think you saw everything until you see that. On any given Saturday morning people come to Peterson Creek Park without a chainsaw, unless of course, they are city employees and they need to attend to some issues in the said park.
